Susan Banks

Susan Banks contributes a group of paintings that explore and subvert the symbolic attributes of mirrors, adapt and modify their definition and question what they reflect.

The paintings reference Baroque mirrors, both sacred and profane, but play with and disrupt visual expectations of light source and transparency. They invite scrutiny but intend to deceive and evade traditional narratives.

The work aims to retain or distil some of the visual pleasures experienced when encountering Baroque paintings whilst eluding their frequently antipathetic meanings.

The viewer is invited to enter a semiotic labyrinth and to disentangle visual metaphors of metaphors in the Baroque tradition and inevitably they will make their own interpretations.
